HY

Heero Yuy

Protagonist / Pilot of Wing Gundam

The stoic, tank-top-wearing weapon of mass destruction who famously responded to a birthday party invitation by ripping it up and telling the host he was going to kill her. Heero defined late-90s anime angst. Whether he's manually resetting his own dislocated bones or casually triggering the self-destruct sequence on his own incredibly expensive mobile suit, he brought a totally unhinged level of dedication to Operation Meteor.
DM

Duo Maxwell

The "God of Death" / Pilot of Deathscythe

The self-proclaimed "God of Death" who ironically had the most vibrant, upbeat personality of the entire cast. With his iconic meter-long braid, priest collar, and the devastatingly cool scythe-wielding Gundam, Duo was easily the breakout fan favorite of the broadcast era. He was the desperately needed, sarcastic comic relief in a show completely packed to the brim with brooding, antisocial teenagers.
TB

Trowa Barton

The Stoic / Pilot of Heavyarms

The incredibly quiet circus acrobat rocking the most structurally impossible bangs in anime history. Trowa rarely spoke, preferring to let the absolute hailstorm of missiles and gatling gun fire from Gundam Heavyarms do the talking for him. His mysterious backstory and bizarrely wholesome cover identity as a traveling clown with a pet lion made him one of the most uniquely compelling pilots in the lineup.
QR

Quatre Raberba Winner

The Heart / Pilot of Sandrock

The genuinely sweet, violin-playing pacifist who was fundamentally too polite for a galactic war. Backed by his fiercely loyal, heavily armed 40-man Maganac Corps, Quatre was the emotional glue that somehow managed to force these five lone wolves to actually work together as a team. He would literally offer a heartfelt apology to enemy soldiers right before his mobile suit cleaved their Leos in two.
CW

Chang Wufei

The Warrior / Pilot of Shenlong

The fiercely independent, intensely proud warrior who took his personal code of justice to exhausting extremes. Constantly shouting "Nataku!" while piloting the dragon-headed Shenlong Gundam, Wufei flat-out refused to fight anyone he deemed weak or unworthy. His rigid, black-and-white worldview and his deeply philosophical rivalry with OZ leadership gave his battlefield encounters a distinctly different, highly personal flavor.
ZM

Zechs Merquise

The Masked Rival / The Lightning Count

The absolute pinnacle of the "masked rival" trope for Western anime fans. Zechs brought unparalleled style and dignity to the battlefield, first piloting the bone-crushingly fast Tallgeese, and later the terrifying Gundam Epyon. His escalating, fiercely honorable rivalry with Heero Yuy fueled some of the most legendary, high-octane AMVs of the dial-up era. He is the standard by which all 90s anime antagonists are measured.
RP

Relena Peacecraft

Pacifist Leader

Starting out as a wealthy socialite who inexplicably fell for the boy who threatened to murder her, Relena pivoted into the ultimate, unyielding advocate for total pacifism. Standing on cliffs and shouting "Heero, come over here and kill me!" into the void remains one of the most delightfully baffling and iconic moments of the Toonami dub era. She single-handedly weaponized the concept of peace.
TK

Treize Khushrenada

Aristocratic Commander

The man who fought a brutal, multi-faction mecha war with the sheer elegance of a Victorian aristocrat. Treize famously kept an exact, staggering mental count of every single soldier who died in his name. He brought a terrifyingly charismatic and deeply philosophical edge to the conflict. Plus, he is arguably the only villain in anime history who could command a global military superpower while casually soaking in a bubble bath filled with rose petals.
LN

Lucrezia Noin

Elite Officer / Loyal Ally

The absolute definition of competence and loyalty in a show completely overrun by unhinged teenagers and rogue aces. Noin held her own on the battlefield using standard-issue Tauruses and Aries mobile suits while everyone else was flying around in invincible Gundam armor. Her unwavering, lifelong dedication to Zechs Merquise and the Peacecraft ideals grounded a lot of the show's wildest political pivots.
LU

Lady Une

OZ Commander / Diplomat

The quintessential late-90s split-personality wildcard. Lady Une operated on two completely extreme wavelengths. Without her glasses, she was a ruthless, bloodthirsty OZ commander who would casually assassinate politicians and launch the Tallgeese out of a transport plane. With her glasses on, she instantly transformed into a gentle, soft-spoken saint who championed Earth-Colony harmony. You never quite knew which version was going to show up to the briefing.
