Comedy Sci-Fi Harem Action

The year is 1992. A six-episode OVA from AIC lands in Japan and begins quietly dismantling the walls between science fiction, comedy, and domestic drama in ways the medium was not quite ready for. By the time Pioneer localized it and VHS tapes started moving through anime clubs in North America, it had already built an underground following through the tape-trading networks that would eventually become fansub culture.

Tenchi Masaki is a perfectly ordinary Japanese teenager living with his grandfather near a Shinto shrine. He is about to have a very bad week. A space pirate named Ryoko - sealed away in a cave beneath the shrine for seven hundred years - gets loose, and within approximately forty-eight hours Tenchi's house is full: Ryoko, who oscillates between destroying things and fixating on Tenchi; Ayeka, a Juraian princess who considers Ryoko her sworn enemy; Sasami, Ayeka's little sister who is considerably more dangerous than she appears; Mihoshi, a Galaxy Police detective of supernatural incompetence; and Washu, the greatest scientific genius in the universe, who will tell you so unprompted.

Also Ryo-Ohki is there. Ryo-Ohki is a cabbit - part cat, part rabbit, part spaceship. She eats carrots.

Produced by AIC and directed by Hiroki Hayashi, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki began in September 1992. The original OVA series across its first two installments runs thirteen episodes and tells a story that begins as a harem comedy and gradually reveals itself to be something much stranger and more mythologically dense - a space opera built on top of a domestic sitcom, with royal lineages and ancient wars buried under jokes about hot springs and cooking.

This is where the Western harem genre came from. This is what the anime clubs were trading tapes of before Pioneer showed up with a box set. This is the foundational text.

Tenchi Masaki

Reluctant Chosen One / Master Swordsman

A seemingly normal, sweet-natured high schooler who spends his summers helping his grandfather maintain a remote Shinto shrine in Okayama. His peaceful rural life is completely shattered when he accidentally breaks a ancient cavern seal, unleashing a space pirate demon who has been trapped for 700 years. Tenchi is the ultimate blueprint for the grounded, level-headed protagonist who reacts to cosmic alien royalty tearing up his house with exasperated sighing—but beneath his polite exterior lies the dormant, mind-bogglingly powerful bloodline of the Jurai royal family and the ability to manifest legendary Light Hawk Wings.

Ryoko

Space Pirate / Chaos Manifest

The legendary, green-haired space pirate who spent seven centuries sealed away in the Masaki shrine woods before Tenchi accidentally let her out. Created by the mad scientist Washu, Ryoko is a chaotic force of pure, unfiltered id—capable of flying through the air, phased transparency, creating energy constructs, and summoning synthetic demon beasts. She views Tenchi as her absolute prize and emotional anchor, bringing a violent, high-energy swagger to the household that completely upends the Earth-bound pacing of the early episodes.

Ayeka

First Princess of Jurai / Royal Rival

The haughty, hyper-traditional, and deeply elegant First Princess of the planet Jurai. She touches down on Earth inside her sentient, organic wooden battleship, Ryu-Oh, while searching the cosmos for her missing half-brother and fiancé. Ayeka embodies strict, old-world space aristocracy—which means she spends 90% of her time trading elite, passive-aggressive verbal barbs with the "space trash" Ryoko and the other 10% completely flustered by her rapidly developing feelings for Tenchi, turning the Masaki household into a literal interstellar warzone.

Second Princess of Jurai / Household Savior

Ayeka’s sweet, incredibly mature younger sister who tags along on the rescue mission and rapidly becomes the absolute logistical backbone of the Masaki residence. While the older girls are busy blowing up the landscape over Tenchi’s attention, Sasami is the miniature chef keeping everyone alive with gourmet cooking and flawless domestic management. However, the original 13-episode OVA drops a massive cosmic bombshell regarding her backstory: she is spiritually fused with Tsunami, one of the three god-like primordial entities of the universe, making her the most deceptively important royal asset on the planet.

Mihoshi Kuramitsu

Galaxy Police Detective / Chaos Magnet

A brilliant yet profoundly clumsy Detective Second Class for the Galaxy Police, hailing from one of the most powerful elite families in the universe. Mihoshi is a walking statistical anomaly—she can get lost inside a straight hallway, crash state-of-the-art patrol cruisers by spilling coffee on the console, and misplace vital criminal files, yet her pure, unadulterated dumb luck consistently unravels massive cosmic conspiracies. Her arrival on Earth permanently bridges the gap between Tenchi’s shrine and the interstellar criminal underworld.

Ryo-Ohki

Cabbit / Living Spaceship

The absolute cutest bio-engineered weapon in science-fiction history. Part cat, part rabbit ("Cabbit"), and entirely obsessed with eating raw carrots, Ryo-Ohki is Ryoko’s fiercely loyal pet companion. Don't let the squeaking and the big eyes fool you, though—she is actually a sentient mass-energy converter capable of transforming into a massive, heavily armed crystalline spaceship that serves as the main transport for the Masaki crew during the violent clashes with Kagato.

Washu Hakubi

No. 1 Genius Scientist / Creator

The self-proclaimed "No. 1 Genius Scientist in the Universe." In the original 13-episode OVA run, she is revealed to be an ancient, god-like entity (and Ryoko's literal creator) who was trapped inside Kagato’s battleship. Once she breaks free and moves into the Masaki household, she turns the sub-basement into a massive, multi-dimensional laboratory. An archive without Washu is missing the literal mechanical and cosmic brain of the entire franchise.

Rogue Juraian / Cosmic Antagonist

The dark, elegant, and completely cold cosmic antagonist of the first major OVA arc. A brilliant former student of Washu who stole Juraian technology and possesses a terrifyingly calm, absolute superiority complex. He is the space pirate responsible for ruining Ayeka's life and serves as the ultimate high-stakes catalyst that forces Tenchi to physically manifest the legendary Light Hawk Wings to survive.
