Details & Synopsis
In 1996, Rumiko Takahashi - the architect of Ranma ½, Maison Ikkoku, and Urusei Yatsura, the most successful female manga artist in the world - began a new series in Weekly Shōnen Sunday. It would run for twelve years and 558 chapters. The anime adaptation began in 2000 and did not stop until 2010.

Kagome Higurashi is a fifteen-year-old girl who lives at a Shinto shrine and falls into the old well in the storehouse. She emerges five hundred years in the past, in the Sengoku period, in a Japan populated by demons, monks, priestesses, and things considerably worse than any of them. She also awakens Inuyasha - a half-demon pinned to a sacred tree with an arrow for fifty years - and accidentally shatters the Shikon Jewel, a jewel of immense power, into hundreds of shards that scatter across feudal Japan.

They have to get the shards back. Naraku is trying to get them first. This is the arrangement.

Produced by Sunrise and directed by Yasunori Ide, Inuyasha aired on Yomiuri TV from 2000 to 2004. One hundred and sixty-seven episodes of the original run, followed by Inuyasha: The Final Act in 2009 - twenty-six episodes that complete the story the manga had finally finished. Adult Swim carried it for years. The fansub community carried it before that, and the uncut versions circulated heavily alongside the broadcast dub for viewers who wanted the story without the edits.

The cast is Takahashi at her most generous: Miroku, a lecherous monk with a wind tunnel in his hand and a death sentence ticking down; Sango, a demon slayer hunting the creature that destroyed her village; Shippo, a small fox demon who contributes mostly by panicking; and Sesshomaru, Inuyasha's full-demon elder brother, so comprehensively cold the show essentially had to invent a separate arc just to give him a reason to exist near the main cast. It works.

The love triangle between Inuyasha, Kagome, and the resurrected priestess Kikyo is the emotional center. It is messy in the way Takahashi's best work is always messy - not because the writing is confused but because the feelings are.

Start with the original run. Watch The Final Act immediately after. Do not stop in the middle.

Inuyasha

Hot-Headed Half-Demon / Tessaiga Wielder

A brash, silver-haired half-demon (Hanyo) who spent 50 years pinned to a sacred tree by a spiritual arrow after a tragic, web-of-lies betrayal. Wearing the impervious Robes of the Fire Rat and wielding the Tessaiga—a massive, rusty katana that transforms into a giant fang capable of blasting hundreds of demons at once—Inuyasha is a walking ball of deep-seated trust issues and stubborn pride. He treats every conversation like a shouting match and is caught in an eternal emotional tug-of-war between his past love and his present companion, though he is easily brought to heel by a literal, neck-snapping compliance spell: "Sit, boy!"
KH

Kagome Higurashi

Reincarnated Priestess / Temporal Archer

A modern, 15-year-old junior high schooler whose life is completely upended when a multi-armed centipede demon drags her down her family shrine's well, dumping her straight into the blood-soaked chaos of the Sengoku Period. As the literal reincarnation of the ancient priestess Kikyo, Kagome possesses immense dormant spiritual powers and the unique ability to detect the Shikon Jewel. After accidentally shattering said jewel into a million cosmic fragments with a stray arrow, she's forced to balance saving the feudal era from total annihilation with studying for her high school math entrance exams.
MI

Miroku

Lecherous Monk / Kazaana Curse-Bearer

A smooth-talking, deceptively spiritual Buddhist monk who travels the countryside performing holy exorcisms (and scamming wealthy villagers out of free lodging). Miroku harbors a terrifying, generational curse inflicted by Naraku: a literal black hole torn into the palm of his right hand called the Wind Tunnel (Kazaana). Capable of violently vacuuming up entire swarms of demons, the tunnel expands over time and will eventually consume him entirely. Driven by this existential ticking clock, he spends 50% of his time hunting the villain and the other 50% hitting on every woman he meets with his iconic, unblushing pickup line: "Would you please bear my child?"
SA

Sango

Badass Demon Slayer / Vengeful Sister

The last elite survivor of the legendary village of Taijiya (Demon Slayers). Sango's life was systematically dismantled in a single night of horror when her entire family was slaughtered, and her brainwashed younger brother, Kohaku, was turned into an undead puppet by Naraku. Wielding the Hiraikotsu—a colossal, razor-sharp boomerang carved from purified demon bones—and riding into battle atop her giant, twin-tailed flying fire-cat, Kirara, she is a fierce frontline powerhouse who masks a deeply fractured, protective heart under ironclad warrior discipline.
SE

Sesshomaru

Aristocratic Overlord / Full-Demon Brother

Inuyasha’s majestic, terrifyingly powerful, and utterly cold-blooded full-demon older brother. Dripping in silver hair, royal markings, and a giant, luxurious fur boa (the Mokomoko-sama), Sesshomaru is a pure aristocratic supremacist who views human beings as sub-human insects and deeply loathes Inuyasha for his half-breed lineage. He spends the early arcs hunting for a weapon of pure mass destruction, furious that his father left him the Tenseiga—a sword that cannot kill, but can only resurrect the dead—until an encounter with a mute human orphan girl named Rin begins to slowly thaw his icy, planet-shattering ego.
NA

Naraku

SPOILER!

The Grand Manipulator / Ultimate Antagonist

A shifting, parasitic collective of thousands of minor demons born from the corrupted, lustful soul of a crippled bandit named Onigumo. Naraku is the ultimate, unmitigated heel of the entire franchise—a master of psychological gaslighting, tragic identity theft, and elaborate multi-decade plots designed to turn loved ones against each other for his own amusement. Safely hidden away behind impenetrable miasma barriers while wearing a creepy baboon skin pelt, he handles fights by generating grotesque physical spawn to do his dirty work, effortlessly escaping in a cloud of purple smoke whenever the Z-Fighters get too close.
KI

Kikyo

SPOILER!

Tragic Undead Priestess / Guardian of the Jewel

The legendary, tragic shrine priestess who was originally tasked with guarding and purifying the Shikon Jewel. After falling in love with Inuyasha, she was caught in Naraku's devastating web of psychological deception, dying with a broken heart after pinning Inuyasha to a sacred tree with her final arrow. Resurrected fifty years later into a hollow clay-and-bone body that requires the stolen souls of dead women just to move, Kikyo wanders the feudal landscape as a melancholy ghost, wielding a sacred longbow with lethal, unblinking precision while trying to figure out how to drag Naraku straight to hell with her.
KO

Koga

Eastern Wolf-Demon Tribe Leader / Romantic Rival

The fiercely proud, hyperactive young leader of the Eastern Wolf-Demon Tribe. With shards of the Shikon Jewel embedded in his legs, Koga possesses blinding, hurricane-level speed that allows him to travel as a literal localized tornado. He enters the narrative with massive swagger, immediately declaring Kagome to be his "woman" due to her sweet nature and jewel-sensing radar. This sparks an aggressive, highly comical, and permanent shouting match with Inuyasha, whom Koga takes great pleasure in referring to exclusively as a "mutt" or "dog-face."
SH

Shippo

Fox-Demon Orphan / Household Comic Relief

A pint-sized, young orphan Kitsune (fox-demon) who joins the group after Inuyasha and Kagome help him avenge his father's murder at the hands of the Thunder Brothers. Shippo specializes in low-tier "Fox Magic," utilizing trickster tools like oversized spinning tops, illusory firebomb toys, and morphing into a giant, floating pink balloon to transport the team. He functions as the ultimate tactical witness of the group—regularly calling Inuyasha out on his terrible communication skills and emotional insensitivity, which usually results in Shippo getting aggressively punched on the head.
KA

Kagura

SPOILER!

Naraku's First Incarnation / Sorceress of the Wind

The very first physical detachment born from Naraku's parasitic flesh. Controlling a lethal array of wind-based magic through her traditional folding fan—including her signature technique to reanimate corpses like macabre puppets—Kagura serves as the primary frontline general for the early seasons. However, beneath her cruel, dutiful exterior hides a fierce, agonizing desire for absolute personal freedom. Because Naraku literally keeps her physical heart locked in his hand to ensure her compliance, her arc is a tense, quiet game of betrayal as she covertly helps the Z-Fighters in a desperate bid to win her autonomy.
